How to support a child’s mixed emotions about divorce in Connecticut

On Behalf of | Jan 19, 2023 | Family Law |

When married couples in Connecticut can no longer work things out, divorce is often the only course of action for them to take. However, the divorce process can be a challenging time for married couples who have children. During this time, these parents must prepare for mixed emotions from their children.

Don’t respond in anger

Divorce is stressful for all parties involved, including your children. So, you can almost expect children to feel angry or upset after learning their parents are divorcing. With that in mind, don’t take your stress and emotions out on your children. This reaction will likely cause your children to stop letting you know how they feel. Instead, look for new hobbies or other outlets for stress release purposes.

Let children know it’s not their fault

Another emotion children often feel during the divorce process is guilt. This feeling can be guilt that your child or children caused their parents to divorce. Both parents must let their children know they’re not at fault for this situation.

Watch out for potential problems at school

For some children, their schools can be a temporary escape for them to get away from divorce-related conversations. Unfortunately, hearing news of a divorce can cause some children to begin acting out at school more often. These behaviors include getting into fights, talking back to teachers, or neglecting schoolwork.

A divorce can be challenging for everyone in a family. As a parent, prepare for children to go through many emotions during the divorce process. One of the best things to do is always to support your children during this difficult time.
