Why you shouldn’t stay together for the children

On Behalf of | Aug 11, 2023 | Family Law |

Connecticut law allows you to get a divorce for any reason and at any time without your spouse’s permission. Furthermore, there are no restrictions on parents divorcing. Therefore, they should not be used as an excuse to avoid ending a relationship you don’t find fulfilling. In fact, staying with your partner may be worse for the kids than getting a divorce.

You’ll be happier

One of the key benefits of getting a divorce is that you’ll be happier, which will give you more energy to be a quality parent. It’s not uncommon for individuals to allow depression or other mental health issues caused by a toxic relationship to interfere with their capacity to interact with their kids. Eventually, your kids may think you don’t love them or don’t see them as a positive part of your life.

Your kids will be happier

If your kids see you fighting with your partner, it can harm their mental health. Therefore, simply taking them out of a toxic environment can have a positive impact on their lives even if they take some time to adjust to their new surroundings.

Your kids may gain additional support

After your divorce, you may start to date again or eventually remarry. While you want to be careful about who you expose your kids to, your future partners may serve as additional mentors for your children. Having a larger support network may be especially helpful if your child has special needs or may struggle to connect with you or your former partner in a meaningful way.

A divorce settlement will generally outline your rights and responsibilities as a parent after your marriage ends. Typically, you’ll be able to remain active in your child’s life even if you choose to get a divorce. Although you can negotiate the terms of a child support or custody agreement outside of court, a judge will need to approve it before it can go into effect.
